What happens at a first primary care visit
A new-patient appointment is a two-way conversation disguised as a checkup. The provider wants to understand who you are, how you have been, and what you hope to get out of your care. Your job is to show up with your history as complete as you can make it.
A typical visit moves through four stages: check-in and intake (insurance, demographics, medication list), the conversation (your history, family history, symptoms and goals), a physical examination appropriate to you, and a care plan (what to do, what to watch, when to follow up). If you need labs or screenings, they are usually ordered at the end of the visit.
What to bring
- Photo ID and your insurance card
- A written list of medications, supplements and their doses
- Recent records or test results from other providers, if you have them
- Your questions, written down so nothing gets forgotten
Questions worth asking
Use the visit to calibrate your care for the year. Good starting questions: What screenings do I need based on my age and history? Are any of my numbers borderline and what moves them? Which symptoms should prompt me to call rather than wait? Do you coordinate with specialists, and how does that work?
After the visit
You should leave knowing your care plan: medications or changes, follow-up timing, and what to watch for. A practice that offers telemedicine can also turn many follow-ups into short video calls instead of trips to the office. If anything in the plan was unclear, call back; that is what the team is for.
The first visit sets the tone for a relationship that can last decades. Investing thirty honest minutes in it pays off every time you get sick, need a referral, or simply want a second pair of eyes on your health.
