IV therapy

What is nutritional IV therapy? A patient's plain-language guide

Nutritional IV therapy is one of the fastest-growing wellness services in the country, and one of the most misunderstood. Here is how it works, what an appointment actually involves, and where the evidence stands.

The basics

Nutritional IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous line. Instead of swallowing a supplement and letting the digestive system decide how much is absorbed, the nutrients go straight into circulation. That is the entire premise of the service: speed and bioavailability. IV hydration works much the same way, replacing fluids and electrolytes without relying on drinking enough water.

Common formulations include saline or balanced fluids with added vitamins and minerals, sometimes described as "vitamin drips" or "hydration IVs." Practices like APRM Solutions offer them as wellness services for people who have goals such as better hydration, recovery after travel or exercise, or general nutritional support.

What an appointment involves

A responsible IV appointment begins before the needle: a medical evaluation. The clinician reviews your health history, current medications, allergies and goals to decide whether IV therapy is appropriate at all. Some people are not candidates, and a good practice will tell you that.

During the session you sit in a recliner while the infusion runs, typically over 30 to 60 minutes depending on the formulation. The medical team stays nearby, checks on you, and reviews aftercare before you leave. Expect the insertion site to be supervised and sterile technique throughout.

What the evidence actually shows

This is where marketing and medicine part ways. No IV vitamin formulation is approved by the FDA to treat or cure any disease. The only randomized controlled trial of a classic "Myers' cocktail" infusion, a small 2009 study in people with fibromyalgia, found the treatment feasible and reasonably safe but could not demonstrate clear benefit over placebo. The MSD Manual summarizes that evidence for most advertised benefits is insufficient.

None of this means IV therapy is fake or useless; it means it is a wellness service with limited studies, not a proven treatment with guaranteed results. Any practice that promises otherwise is overstating the science.

Risks and who should be careful

IV therapy is a medical procedure, and procedures carry risks: irritation or infection at the insertion site, infusion reactions, and complications if the wrong formulation is used or the person is not a good candidate. People with certain kidney, heart or fluid-balance conditions, or those on medications like blood thinners, need special review. Regulatory agencies have also raised quality concerns about some compounded infusion products, so it is reasonable to ask how a practice sources its formulations. The APRM Solutions team discusses all of this before any session.

Does insurance cover IV therapy at APRM Solutions?

Insurance-based nutritional IV therapy is one of the defining services of the practice. Whether your plan covers a specific formulation depends on the plan, the service and how it is reviewed clinically. The team verifies your eligibility before you book, so you are not guessing. Call (475) 314-3113 or request an appointment and the team will walk through it.
